When you buy fresh cannabis buds, there’s a good chance you’re not buying what you need for one session. You’re likely getting enough to last you a little while. Since you’re not going to use it all at once, you’ll have to leave the unused portion somewhere, but where? Storing weed to keep it fresh is essential for preserving potency and delicate terpenes. Here are a few tips to help ensure your bud lasts.

The Effects of Poor Storage

To understand the importance of cannabis storage, it’s necessary to know what happens when you don’t store it properly. Poorly stored weed degrades quickly. You lose THC, which means your stash becomes less potent. Terpenes deteriorate, which affects the flavor. Your buds get dry and crumbly. No matter how you look at it, poor storage leads to a bad time.

Storing Weed to Keep It Fresh

Here are a few tips for optimal weed storage:

Use an Airtight Container

Airflow is vital for bud growth. Once harvested, you need to control the amount your buds get. Too much air can quickly dry your buds, turning them into a crumbly mess. Too little, especially on buds that aren’t dried completely, can affect humidity levels, which we’ll get into shortly. Use an airtight container to restrict airflow while also trapping some inside.

Keep It Dark and Cool

Light and heat are the enemies of your cannabis stash. It quickly degrades your buds, leading to lost potency and flavor. Heat can do the same. Store your buds in a cool, dark space, such as a cabinet.

Pay Attention to Humidity

Humidity can have a significant impact on the longevity of your cannabis stash. Too little, and your buds become dry and brittle. Too much, and you could end up with mold and mildew. You want to keep it just right, ideally between 59% and 63%.

Cannabis Storage Don’ts for Proper Storage

Here are a few things you’ll want to avoid at all costs:

Don’t Store Weed In the Freezer or Fridge

You might think freezing your stash would keep it longer, but it actually has the opposite effect. Freezing could cause trichomes to fall from your buds, reducing potency. You also want to avoid the fridge. Temperature and light fluctuations could promote mold growth.

Don’t Keep Near Appliances

Appliances produce heat, which, as we mentioned, can degrade your buds. Instead, store your stash in a cool, dark location like a cabinet or basement.

Don’t Use a Humidor or Plastic

A humidor is great for tobacco products, but most are cedarwood. The oils in the wood could seep into your buds, affecting their flavor. At the same time, you should also avoid plastic bags and containers. Plastic could attract trichomes via static charge, removing them from your flowers and affecting potency. Use glass instead.

Keep Weed Fresher Longer

When you want your cannabis stash to last, proper storage is everything. These tips should help you to keep your buds fresher for longer. That way, every session will provide an optimal, enjoyable experience.
